Water Lane Church is a vibrant, welcoming and inclusive church. People of all ages form an important part of the congregation. The church has a thriving junior church but people of all ages and walks of life are embraced and affirmed. The people of Water Lane Church consider Compassion and Community to be their most important priority. An outward looking church, Mission and Outreach both in the local community and the wider world is seen to be an essential part of our calling, especially on issues of fairness, justice and peace. Water Lane considers faith to be a life-long journey. As a church on a journey, together we seek to find God’s will for us as individuals and as a community in this busy and stressful world. Community Church
(part of New Frontiers International) charis

‘Friendly’ ‘Relevant’ ‘Loads of young people’ ‘Enjoyable’ and ‘Vibrant’ are words often used by visitors to describe their first experience of the Community Church. We believe that “church” is God’s house and it should be somewhere we can be ourselves and feel we belong. We want to make friends and be friends with people of all ages and backgrounds and that’s reflected in the variety of people that can be seen at the Charis Centre every Sunday and throughout the week. God is awesome in power, full of love and completely pure – and deserves a church on the earth that represents him well. So we want to build a community that displays God to society so that everyone can look at the church and get a glimpse of God. That means a church that is large and strong, caring and passionate, genuine and sincere. It’s a challenging vision that we’re working on because we’re determined to build a community for God’s glory.

St. James the Great, Thorley
(Church of England) St James

Christians have worshipped in the church of St James The Great, Thorley, for over 750 years, during which time the church family has sought to serve God and the people of Bishop's Stortford. Our aim always is to understand more fully what Christ calls us to be, and to make him known; to offer a welcome to all who seek to know about him; and to give encouragement to the people of the community in their journey through life. The ministry of St James' is expressed in various forms, but mainly through the celebration of the eucharist, the preaching of the word, worship, pastoral care to both church and wider community, small group fellowships, community projects, the Alpha programme for those seeking to know more about the basics of our christian faith, and, crucially, a ministry to the young in the church and wider community.

St. Joseph & English Martyrs
(Roman Catholic) St Joseph's

St Joseph’s, close to the centre of Bishop’s Stortford, is a busy Roman Catholic church serving a worshipping community of about 750 people. Seeking to know and love Christ through Word and Sacrament, we acknowledge our obligation to make Christ known to the world beyond the confines of the church: this we do, wherever possible, with other Christian communities in the town. The parish community has a strong sense of collaboration, recognising that our oneness in Christ lays upon us all, priest and laity alike, a shared responsibility for the life of the parish, material and spiritual. Our weekend Masses offer a variety of styles of worship. Saturday and Sunday at 6pm are quieter and without music; Sunday at 9am is geared both musically and in content to the needs of children; 11am is more traditional with a mixture of English and Latin music. There is a network of small groups which meet in a spirit of prayer and enquiry to deepen the faith of members and share that faith with others.
